The waterway historically known as the Sheerness Canal is officially called the Queenborough Lines. Dug originally in 1782 and significantly reinforced during the 1860s, this canal was designed as a wide defensive moat and rampart system to protect the Sheerness Royal Naval Dockyard from landward military attacks. It effectively sliced the tip of the Sheerness peninsula away from the rest of the Isle of Sheppey in a remarkably straight line, stretching from the eastern seawall to the western seawall.Today, the canal is known locally as "Canal Bank" and serves as a major hub for recreation, nature, and history.Barton's Point Coastal ParkThe prominent remaining stretch of the canal runs directly through Barton's Point Coastal Park. Located between Minster and Sheerness, this park repurposes the historic military waterway for outdoor activities. Visitors can walk along the canal banks, spot local wildlife, or take advantage of the park's family-friendly amenities, including a pirate-themed adventure play area and the Boat House Café.The canal is a centerpiece for local trail networks. The Sheerness Way (a popular 6.1-mile circular cycling route often nicknamed "Ships and Chips") leads cyclists over the Barton's Point bridge and directly along the "canal bank". Walkers can also utilise the easy Sheerness Canals Trail, a flat 3.1-mile pathway offering scenic views that transitions smoothly from the canal environment toward the sea defenses and sandy beaches. While exploring the canal, sharp-eyed visitors can still find physical remnants of its operational military past. Beyond its 18th and 19th-century earthwork structures, concrete gun footings and emplacements from both World War I and World War II remain visible along the line, highlighting how long this waterway remained integral to Britain's coastal defense. #dronephotography #dronevideo #leysdownonsea #sheppey #fypシ #fyp #fpv #photography #viralreelsシ #viral #dronevideo #facebookreels #queenborough #Sheerness #seaside #dji #djimini4k #Kent #england #djifly #men #DronePhotography #DronePhoto #DroneVideo #DronePilot
