Installing an aftermarket subwoofer amplifier in my 2015 Mini Cooper S F56, which has the base audio system — no factory sub, no Harman Kardon upgrade, so this is a from-scratch add. The amp I'm using does automatic signal sensing (it turns itself on and off based on whether it detects audio) so I don't need to run a remote turn-on wire, which saves a lot of routing. Power comes through the firewall via a small hole I drilled next to an existing wiring grommet — same panel that was already open from a previous project, so I could keep the same access point clean. For signal, I used RCA pigtails (JL Audio) that splice into the factory speaker wiring rather than needing a dedicated aftermarket head unit output: at the factory Harman/Becker amp, the blue-with-red-stripe and blue-with-brown-stripe pair feeds the passenger-side door woofer, and the black-with-red-stripe and black-with-brown-stripe pair feeds the driver side — tap those and you have your subwoofer signal. Also ran a length of Cat5e back to the front of the car so I have the wiring in place for a bass-level knob later, even though I don't have one on hand yet (Alpine makes one for this amp) — RJ11 connectors on each end, six conductors, easy to make your own cable to whatever length you need. Getting to any of this meant a fair amount of interior disassembly: rear seat bottom and seatback out (the seatback cap has a snap-and-squeeze retainer, then a single 10mm bolt holds the seat hinge), side panels off (careful routing around the seatbelt bolt — that one's a T50 — and away from anything secured by a plastic grommet, which usually isn't a solid ground point), which exposes the factory amp. Found my ground at an existing factory ground stud back there rather than adding a new one. When routing the wiring, I stayed tucked behind the carpet and away from pinch points — anywhere a harness moves in and out through an opening is worth routing well clear of. Amp is currently just Velcroed to the floor in the spare-tire area; I may build a small false floor or cover for it since that space isn't otherwise very useful. Running an 8" JBL GT0804 I already had on hand for now — it's not a huge sub, but in a hatchback this size, especially with a boundary nearby to reinforce it, a smaller sub can do surprisingly well. This isn't necessarily the sub that stays long-term; I mostly wanted to hear it and get a feel for how it performs before deciding on anything more permanent. similar wiring kit: https://amzn.to/3KWaFGJ GEAR IN THE GARAGE: My Kranzle Pressure Washer https://bit.ly/3dIV6Ub My Cox Pressure Washer Hose Reel https://bit.ly/3dqQUYV Prevost Blow Gun (rubber) https://bit.ly/3woNpL0 PCL Twin Chuck https://bit.ly/3mdmAFb PCL Tire Pressure Gauge https://bit.ly/3cIhkpJ Garden Hose female QD https://bit.ly/3cLvqqx Garden Hose Male QD https://bit.ly/2PSsAXT Kranzle M22 to QD https://bit.ly/3wjULQ5 Pressure washer reel jumper hose https://bit.ly/2QSeLZM Pressure washer shelf https://bit.ly/3cKNIrP Shelf Hardware Kit https://bit.ly/3cIr2IU MTM Pressure Washer Gun https://bit.ly/3cMcuYw Pressure Washer Nozzle https://bit.ly/3mdfjFr Check out THOR get 10% off: https://thehouseofrags.com/?ref=ig10 Use Code: IMPROVEDGARAGE10 for 10% off diamond protech products or visit https://spn.so/5uidqija Check out obsessed garage here: https://bit.ly/3fy6Tal You can now use code IG to save 5% at carzilla!
