This was my first time hearing "Shadowplay," and I came away with a much better appreciation for Joy Division's sound. Going into it, I expected something a little more electronic, but I was pleasantly surprised by how guitar-driven the song was. The guitar ended up being my favorite part of the entire track. The solo has such a unique sound. It almost reminds me of those guitar tones from the '60s—not quite surf rock like The Ventures and not exactly psychedelic either—but somewhere in between. It's a really distinctive tone that gives the song its own personality. As I paid attention to the lyrics, they struck me as being pretty dark and introspective. Knowing Ian Curtis's story, I couldn't help but wonder where he was mentally when he wrote them. I don't know the timeline behind the song, so I'd love to hear from longtime Joy Division fans. If I were putting together a late-'70s or early-'80s post-punk/indie playlist, this would definitely earn a spot. It may not be a song I'd throw on every day, but it's one I definitely appreciate, and I'd give it a solid thumbs up.
