Eight novice four-wheel drivers. One goal. Cross the Simpson Desert for the very first time. What started as a week of preparation on the tracks of Willow Springs Station and a detour through the ghost town of Farina quickly turned into a crash course in what the Australian outback demands of you — broken brake lines, flat tyres, a sluggish engine on the Oodnadatta Track, and an oil leak before we'd even reached the desert. Then came the French Line. 1,099 sand dunes, 400km of red dirt, no towns, no fuel, no mobile reception, and no second chances. We bogged. We recovered. We helped a stranger's vehicle out of a salt pan at Poeppel Lake using every technique in the book. We crossed Eyre Creek on a gamble. And we came face to face with Big Red — the Simpson's tallest dune — where a fuel filter I hadn't properly cleaned nearly cost me the final climb. Nine days. A thousand dunes. Countless mechanical issues. Somehow, we made it to Birdsville.
