This is the first 2.2 miles of the hike up Mary Mtn Trail from the trailhead at the north end of Hayden Valley. It is basically a rolling-hills meadow. Hayden Valley is to the left (south). At this time of year - early June - the trail still has some mushy areas, and there are a few places where you can temporarily lose the path as a result. Your shoes will be six inches deep in mud at times - this being just the first two miles.
Note: There's a lot of wind noise on this hike so its recommended to use headphones.
I was hiking alone and chose not to continue on to the more dense areas where large animals could suddenly appear, and where I would become significantly distant from others, should I have any problem. There were two other hikers, alone, in the general vicinity deeper into this hike on this late-spring afternoon. They proceeded farther than I, but are younger and more capable than I.
I did not have a hiking partner this day and therefore chose a hiking path with clear visibility around the trail, and chose not to hike more than about two miles. There are too many people who have gotten into trouble hiking alone. I'm not on YouTube as a risk taker. This video is for exercising on a treadmill that has a monitor attached, and I hope some people can enjoy it! :)
It is very common to see bison along this trail, and less common, but very possible, to encounter bears. Always carry bear spray, and it is recommended to hike in groups of three or more.

Here is a link to a great YouTube page where she hiked the entire 21 miles or so of the trail...
