Please complete a short feedback survey about your experience today at https://engineersaustralia.wufoo.com/... Join us for a webinar on Thursday 13th August as we discuss the general engineering principles of design for Precast concrete. Dr Shan Kumar, winner of the prestigious John Connell Gold Medal Award 2019*, will lead our discussion on best practice outcomes for engineers and other stakeholders, sharing insights into the benefits of utilising Precast, through the use of relevant case studies. This webinar will focus on building awareness, improving construction design and reducing costs. We will outline how to design in precast concrete, the principles of ‘design for manufacturability and assembly’, as well as how precast concrete can achieve a reduction in both material costs and construction time. Key Themes: General principles of precast concrete Key features and benefits of design for manufacturability and assembly Reduction of costs and construction time Local and International case studies *The John Connell Gold Medal Award recognises a significant contribution to the standing and prestige of the structural engineering profession. Preliminary Program AEST 5.30 pm - 5.35 pm Welcome Address 5.35 pm - 6.30 pm Presentations 6.30 pm - 7.00 pm Online audience Q&A This webinar is worth 1.5 CPD hours. Speaker Dr Shan Kumar FIEAust CPEng NER APEC Engineer IntPE(Aus) National President | Concrete Institute of Australia Shan is a senior structural and innovation engineer in Melbourne and has over thirty years’ experience working on a range of building & Infrastructure projects. His major involvement has been with high rise commercial, residential, sports venue and industrial projects in reinforced and prestressed concrete and steel structures. He has led the Design and Construction Advisory Teams at Hickory for the seven-story modular Stella Apartment building in Cockburn, the 17 story Peppers King modular construction in Perth and the 44 story HBS modular construction in Latrobe Street, Melbourne. He also led the Structural Innovation team for the development of the new HBS system. With his previous job Shan worked with John Connell associate, Connell Wagner and Aurecon for more than 20 years involved with numbers of Melbourne iconic projects such as Crown Casino, Eureka tower & Marvel Stadium. Shan led the HBS innovation team responsible for design and construction of number of high-rise buildings including National Award-winning project 45 story student accommodation and CTBUH award winner 60 story Collins House (4th Slimmest tower in the world). Shan is a Professional Fellow at Swinburne University and a visiting lecturer & honorary fellow at University of Melbourne since 2001 and the current national councillor and the current National President of Concrete Institute of Australia. In recognition of Shan’s 30 years plus contribution to Construction industry The Swinburne University of Technology has awarded Shan with honorary doctorate in engineering. Shan has been recently awarded with one of most innovative engineers 2017 by the Institution of Australia for his involvement with the La Trobe tower in Melbourne Australia. Joe Thompson Project Leader | Laing O'Rourke Joe Thompson is a passionate engineer, constructor, team builder and project leader. Over the last 25 years, his construction resume includes a diverse range of building and Infrastructure projects in the UK, Hong Kong, and Sydney. Since 2006, Joe has been at the centre of a drive to improve construction efficiency through off-site manufactured components, specifically structural precast elements in reinforced concrete structures. Witnessing first-hand the successes and failures at project level, he is enthusiastic about sharing those experiences with fellow engineers and industry professionals. Joe is a keen cyclist, runner, skier and mountaineer - with the pure enjoyment at participation significantly exceeding talent or ability in each case.
