Goodnight, Old City is a soft afro pop ballad with a slow R&B heart, a calm night song for the hour when a whole town goes quiet and one person stays awake to watch it happen.
The narrator is the last to leave the evening, walking home and pulling the streets behind them. Piece by piece the place closes up: shutters clap their hands goodnight, keys turn one by one, and the baker banks his fire down so the first warm loaves will be ready at dawn. The café folds its chairs and a cat takes the last of the light. Every doorway is a chapter of a book read twice, and the town yawns like an old lion while the narrator lowers their voice for love.
The second verse turns from streets to memory. These walls held the dancers and the sailors, the henna nights and the vows. They kept the narrator's worst year in a doorway and never said it out loud, and under the paint on number nine a name is still scratched in. Then the harbour puts its lights away, and the goodnight becomes a kind of thank you.
The turn comes in the bridge, where the music falls to one unaccompanied voice. One window is still gold: a pen, a hand, a chair. The narrator asks the city to leave that lamp for last, because some of us are still becoming. In the final chorus a single line changes. Before, all the loves were sleeping in; now all but one are. The song ends in a whisper, asking the city to hold the ones it sang about, and to hold the singer too.
"Old walls are the best of friends"
WHAT THIS SONG IS ABOUT
It is about home as a place that remembers you: gratitude to streets that witnessed love, grief and celebration without judging any of it, and the quiet ritual of saying goodnight to somewhere that has held your whole life. Under the lullaby sits a gentle hope that even when everything else is asleep, a person can still be growing, still writing, still becoming.
WHO IT IS FOR
Play it as a calm night song when the house goes dark, on a late walk home, or at the end of a long trip back to the place you grew up. It is a nostalgic love song for anyone who misses an old neighbourhood, for writers and dreamers working past midnight, and for anyone who wants songs about home that feel warm rather than sad. If you love an afro pop ballad with room to breathe, mellow r&b music and African music that whispers instead of shouts, keep this one for your quiet hours.
ABOUT THE ALBUM
This track is from Soft Life, Clean Heart, a set of tender afro pop stories about love, loss and letting go, from a hallway light left on for anyone arriving late to a ferry gate, a rainy taxi ride and a grandmother who still dances semba. Goodnight, Old City is one of its gentlest moments.
