Nightclub owner T.J. Brennon dies in a fiery car crash, and in the aftermath, two narcotics agents are found murdered in his apartment. The case lands on the desk of the local police, who are soon joined by Bill Brennon, the dead man's brother and a seasoned cop determined to uncover the truth behind the carnage. At the center of the storm is Lynn Brennon, T.J.'s wife and a nightclub singer, who identifies her husband's body only to witness the subsequent slaying of the two agents—a trauma that shatters her nerves and makes her the prime suspect. As Bill digs deeper, he discovers that his brother was tangled in a heroin smuggling ring, and that the three deaths are far from coincidental. Directed by Joseph Kane in his final outing for Republic Pictures, this lean seventy-minute film noir was shot in lustrous black-and-white Naturama by Jack A. Marta and features a screenplay by Richard C. Sarafian. Rod Cameron brings a workmanlike stoicism to the role of the avenging brother, while Vera Ralston—in her final screen appearance—embodies the fragile, haunted widow. A moody, twisty B-picture from the dying days of a legendary studio, The Man Who Died Twice is a compact and atmospheric crime drama that rewards genre devotees.
