Psychotherapist Bruce Ecker, LMFT is interviewed here by Suzy Siegle, MBA, J.D., Ed.D., Dean and Associate Professor of Business and Entrepreneurship in the Haab School of Business, for her online interview series, "Success and the Subconscious Mind” at https://www.successandthesubconscious...
“By far the most important component of my classes,” Suzy has written, "is the content on emotions, the subconscious mind, and how memory influences our perceptions, decisions and outcomes.”
Bruce explains why so many attempts to change a negative, limiting pattern, such as procrastination, don’t hold permanently and the pattern reasserts itself. He describes the brain mechanisms and behavior processes responsible for relapse and for making changes that last. The key is an understanding of memory reconsolidation, the brain's innate mechanism for making fundamental changes in a pattern previously learned.
Use of the reconsolidation process in psychotherapy is thoroughly mapped out, with many case examples, in the Routledge book, Unlocking the Emotional Brain: Eliminating Symptoms at Their Roots Using Memory Reconsolidation
