This lesson explains how early years practitioners should respond to medication errors and medical emergencies while keeping the child’s safety at the centre. It defines common incidents, including incorrect medicines or doses, missed doses, allergic reactions, anaphylaxis, refusal to take medicine and unsafe storage. You will learn the emergency signs that require an immediate 999 call, including difficulty breathing, seizures, unresponsiveness and shock, as well as the importance of following the child’s individual healthcare plan for prescribed emergency medication. The lesson also sets out the medication error pathway: assess the child, seek urgent medical advice, inform the manager or DSL, record what happened and never give additional medicine unless advised by a healthcare professional. It covers same-day communication with parents or carers, accurate incident recording, debriefing, reviewing procedures, refresher training and possible external reporting. The key sequence is to protect the child, get the right help, inform the right people, record the facts and review practice.
