Day 101 - Robin Falls Camp to Darwin Outskirts
This adventure took place in the latter half of 2024. Come with me on a zig-zag tour of the country — an inside lap, an outside lap, the inner and outer corners, the extremities, the highs and the lows, the good roads, the bad roads and sometimes not even any roads at all.
Day 101 begins reluctantly, leaving a quiet hot-springs campsite on the eastern side of Litchfield. The water was warm, the morning was still, and it would’ve been easy to stay another day but the park was calling. Today was all about exploring Litchfield National Park, bouncing between 4WD tracks, waterfalls, termite fields, and old homestead country before finally rolling north toward Batchelor and the outskirts of Darwin.
I dropped into the Reynolds River Track, crossing the southern arm first, then threading along Surprise Creek Access Track. Slow, sandy, winding country that feels like classic Top End 4WD. The day opened up at the Termite Mounds, then swung across the Reynolds River again before heading into the Sandy Creek corridor for Tjaynera Falls. From there it was a run out to Blyth Homestead, a relic of early pastoral life tucked into the escarpment.
The northern end of Reynolds River Track delivered the final crossing at Tolmer Creek, then a short walk to Tolmer Falls, one of Litchfield’s most dramatic drop-offs. A detour down the Lost City Track added some proper rock-pillar country before the day eased out. Batchelor, the Stuart Highway, and the transition from bush to the Darwin fringe.
It felt like an off-road day. Slow, technical, twisty, but the stats tell a different story. More sealed kilometres than dirt, higher average speeds on the asphalt, and a curve density that proves even the “easy” sections were meandering and picturesque.
