She Bought 70 Nettle Choked Acres for Delinquent Taxes — Her Hogs Rooted It Down to an Old Stone Dam The morning of the auction, there were nineteen hogs nobody wanted. They were huddled in the furthest corner of the holding pens, a shivering, motley collection of swaybacked, coarse-haired creatures that looked less like modern agricultural assets and more like something feral that had wandered out of a forgotten woods. Their ribs showed through their pale, mud-caked skin like the wooden ribs of unfinished boats left to rot on a dry shore, and their eyes held the dull, flat resignation of animals that had been shuffled from one barren patch of dirt to another without ever knowing the comfort of deep pasture or the shade of a good oak tree. The auction house itself was a cavernous, drafty structure built of corrugated tin and cinderblock, filled with the sharp, ammonia scent of fear, the heavy musk of damp wool, the acrid bite of diesel exhaust from the idling livestock trailers outside, and the stale, burnt aroma of cheap coffee simmering in a dented aluminum percolator at the back concession stand.
