He married the sister of French pianist and composer Cécile Chaminade. In the later 1880s ill health forced him to give up concert appearances and he concentrated on composing and conducting. He retired in 1897 and settled in Paris. He lost all his savings during the First World War but was assisted by many admiring pianists, with fifteen of them giving a joint benefit concert for him in Carnegie Hall in 1921. He wrote extensively for his instrument and his two Books of Spanish Dances for piano duet achieved international acclaim and remain popular to this day. He also wrote for the stage and for orchestra, but these works have not retained any popularity. This Waltz, dedicated to Theodore Ritter (a fellow pianist/ composer and pupil of Liszt, 1841-1886), was once highly popular, being frequently played in Palm Courts and similar place of light entertainment.
