California Homeless Crisis 2026: Fentanyl, Encampments & Life on the Streets | Homeless in America
California is home to some of the richest cities in the United States — yet across sidewalks, underpasses, and homeless encampments, another reality continues to grow.
In this episode of Life of the Homeless in America, we examine the California homeless crisis in 2026 and how fentanyl, rising housing costs, poverty, and long-term street homelessness are colliding across the state.
Inside many homeless camps, daily survival is becoming more difficult. People are living in tents, improvised shelters, vehicles, and public spaces while facing unstable housing, untreated health problems, addiction, and limited access to long-term support.
At the same time, the California fentanyl crisis is adding another layer of danger. For people already living without stable shelter, substance dependence can make it even harder to reconnect with housing, treatment, employment, family, or consistent medical care.
This documentary looks beyond the tents themselves.
Why do encampments continue to grow in a state with enormous wealth? Why do some people remain outside even when outreach programs and nonprofit services exist? And what happens when the housing crisis and the drug crisis begin reinforcing each other?
Through street-level footage and human stories, we take a closer look at homelessness in California, the expansion of homeless camps, and the difficult realities behind one of America's most visible social crises.
📍 QUESTION FOR YOU:
Is fentanyl now one of the biggest barriers preventing people from leaving California's homeless encampments — or is housing still the deeper problem?
