India’s aerospace industry is entering a new phase as more Indian companies begin developing the propulsion systems that power modern drones and unmanned aircraft. For years, India relied heavily on imported small jet engines, while countries such as China, Turkey and the United States built larger ecosystems around compact aviation propulsion. That picture is now changing as Indian companies work to create a stronger Indian propulsion ecosystem.
This video looks at the rise of India’s indigenous turbojet industry and the companies developing engines for UAVs, military drones. Building these engines domestically can reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.
One company drawing attention is Nabhdrishti, an Indian engine startup whose founders have experience with major aerospace organisations including General Electric, Rolls-Royce and GTRE. Its ND400 micro turbojet has reached prototype testing. With maximum thrust of around 400 Newtons, the engine is aimed at compact unmanned platforms.
The bigger story is not just one engine. Nabhdrishti is following a strong indigenization strategy, with the engine designed in India and its components, parts and forgings manufactured domestically. Its roadmap includes a 2 MW-class engine and green hydrogen fuel research.
India’s drone industry is expanding, but indigenous propulsion has remained a major gap. Many Indian companies can manufacture UAV platforms, but far fewer produce their own propulsion systems. Developing these capabilities could become a major advantage for India’s defence manufacturing sector.
Several other Indian companies are also progressing in this field. DG Propulsion, Raghu Vamsi and Dheya Tech are among the names associated with indigenous turbojet development and testing. As these projects move from prototype development toward user trials and production, India could build a domestic supply chain for compact jet propulsion.
This development also connects with the changing role of India’s public research institutions. Technologies developed through organisations such as ISRO and DRDO are increasingly finding pathways into private industry. Multiple manufacturers can increase competition, scale production and reduce costs. A similar model could help India develop a broader ecosystem around aircraft engines and critical aerospace components.
The strategic importance for India is enormous. Indigenous jet propulsion can support surveillance UAVs, target drones, high-speed unmanned aircraft, loitering systems and combat drones. It can also create an opportunity for India to become an exporter of specialised propulsion technology rather than remaining only an importer of foreign engines.
India is still working to close a major technology gap in high-thrust aircraft engines, but progress in micro turbojets should not be underestimated. The industry is moving from prototypes toward user trials, validation and production.
If these projects succeed, the coming years could see a major expansion of turbojet engine manufacturing in India. Domestic companies could supply engines to Indian defence manufacturers and eventually compete in international markets. That would make Indian Jet Engine technology an increasingly important part of the country’s aerospace and defence story.
