Rakhi, Ads Controversy, Taxpayer Returns & NEET Paper Leak: Politics, Bureaucracy, Merit and Reservation Reform We wish everyone a very happy Raksha Bandhan, and we're sorry for the short break we took — we're back now. We wanted to start by explaining something about our own community: many Paliwals traditionally don't celebrate Rakhi. The reason goes back to an attack on Pali, in which the losses were so severe that they were measured by the weight of the janeu removed from the dead. There's a well in the area that's said to still hold those threads. We should add that not every family follows this uniformly — some resume celebrating if a child is born in the family on Rakhi. From there we got into what modern advertising does to festivals. We feel brands keep trying to "modernize" our traditions, and we think there's a clear double standard in how different religions get treated in these campaigns. Our sense is that a lot of the outrage around this is engineered for visibility, and when people point that out, they get gaslit for raising it at all. That took us into politics and governance. We asked what taxpayers actually get back for what they pay, and talked about the corruption we see in road building and public works. We think protest has become the only language left, because ordinary dialogue has broken down so badly — complaints go unanswered, and dissent gets dismissed as a paid campaign. We also went back and forth on the NEET paper leaks and what could fix them: full digitization, large question banks, more seats, and some regulation of the coaching industry. We brought up Aadhaar and other process failures, and pointed to passport services as an example of outsourcing that worked.
