The song that closed China's biggest film of the summer — and a Chinese lesson you'll actually want to repeat. "Beyond the Halls of Power" (庙堂之外), sung by Chen Chusheng, ends The Lychee Road (长安的荔枝): the story of Li Shande, a ninth-rank clerk who is handed an impossible order — carry fresh lychees 2,500 km across the Tang empire before the emperor's favourite consort's birthday. He is nobody. He is given the credit of nobody. And this song is what he would have said, if anyone had ever asked him. Every line carries three layers of subtitles: • Pinyin with tone marks — sing along instead of guessing the sounds • Chinese characters — the real thing, no romanisation crutch • Natural English — translated for meaning, not word for word 🎧 How to actually use this video 1. Listen once without reading. Just feel it. 2. Listen again and follow the pinyin — hum the tones. 3. Third pass: read only the characters. You'll be surprised how much you recognise. 4. Then sing it. Out loud. Badly. That is how speaking happens. ⏱ Chapters 00:00 Opening 00:15 你看 谁家年少 — "Look, whose fine son is this?" 00:39 照他步履忙 — the capital at night 00:57 未必论着功行赏 — merit doesn't always get paid 01:07 名和禄 一把算盘 — fame and salary, an abacus 01:24 无人欺我无依傍 — no one bullies me now 01:35 我当 敬那庙堂之外的月光 — the moonlight beyond the halls 02:17 心照可宣 无愧天地间 — a clear conscience 02:37 我当 逐明月枕清风 — chasing the moon, sleeping on the wind 02:59 我当 敬那庙堂之外的月光 (reprise) 03:29 我当 见长河水汤汤 — the long river 03:42 遥遥一抬手 致万乡 致盛唐 — to ten thousand villages, to the great Tang 04:15 我敬 燕儿满口泥 安的家 — a swallow building a home 📚 Language notes • 庙堂 (miào táng) = the imperial court. 江湖 (jiāng hú) = the world outside it. The entire song lives in the gap between those two words — and that gap is the key to a lot of Chinese thinking about power, ambition and dignity. • Structures worth stealing: 不过 (nothing more than), 何妨 (what does it matter), 皆可 (all may), 敢当 (dare to bear it) • Best for HSK 3–5 learners who are tired of textbook dialogues about buying train tickets. 👩‍🏫 Who I am I'm Nini — an international Chinese teacher with ten years of classroom experience abroad, including service as a government-sponsored teacher at a Confucius Institute. Easy Chinese Nini is where I share the music Chinese people are actually listening to right now, so the language sounds alive instead of frozen in a textbook. 🔔 A new song every week — subscribe so you don't miss the next one. 💬 Which line stayed with you?
