Story Begins
Narration: The first rays of the morning sun spread across the large courtyard of the old haveli (mansion), where clouds of dust are swirling. Swarna, with the pallu of her cotton sari tucked firmly around her waist, is dragging brass buckets and a ladder.
Swarna (25): (Matter-of-factly) Lallu, keep your voice down! First, clean every single leaf of that heavy chandelier—don’t pour water on the floor just yet!
Lallu (22): (Exasperated) Chhoti Bahu-ji*, my hands are raw from scrubbing since five in the morning! No one has even touched these ceilings in this *haveli for years!
Swarna (25): (Laughing) So, because your hands are raw, are you going to stop working? Diwali is just five days away—are we supposed to welcome Goddess Lakshmi amidst all this dust and debris?
Hariya Kaka (54): (Somberly) Child, the water for tea has boiled down to half on the stove, but I still can’t fathom why this sudden whirlwind of activity has descended upon this desolate place today. Swarna (25): [Neutral tone] It’s not a storm, Kaka—this is my first Diwali in this house! Should my first Diwali be spent amidst cobwebs and filthy corners like these?
Hariya Kaka (54): [Somber tone] Oh, child... no one has even applied a fresh coat of whitewash to this threshold in three years. My heart just sinks looking at all this.
Swarna (25): [Distressed] Why does your heart sink? Everyone will feel better once the house is clean and tidy! Lallu, take down those heavy velvet curtains from the living room and put them out in the courtyard!
Lallu (22): [Exclaiming] Good heavens! Pigeons have built nests behind these curtains, *Bahu-ji*—my eyes are completely filled with dust!
Narration: As the heavy curtains fall, a cloud of dust rises in the courtyard. Just then, the father-in-law, Suryakant-ji, and the eldest brother-in-law, Avadhesh, descend the stairs, coughing loudly.
Suryakant (56): [Exclaiming] Good grief! What kind of calamity has struck the haveli this early in the morning? Can’t anyone even breathe in peace around here?
Swarna (25): [Neutral tone] Namaste, *Babu-ji*! It’s no calamity—I’m just getting the Diwali cleaning done. Please, have a seat; I’ll bring you some hot water and tea right away.
Avadhesh (36): [Angrily] *Bahu*, who dragged all these sofas and tables into the middle of the courtyard? You’ve blocked our only way out!
Swarna (25): [Somber tone] *Bade Bhaiya*, the rats had dug burrows behind the sofas. If we didn’t clean it today, how would we have gotten rid of the stench by the time the festival arrived? Bhuvnesh (33):: Annoyed // But daughter-in-law, what’s the point of all this fuss? In our household, we simply light a lamp in the shrine, and that’s the end of it.
Swarna (25):: Crying // That’s the end of it? This is my first Diwali in this home—is it really going to be spent with such a heavy, joyless heart?
Narration - The wooden door of the room creaks open. Mayank steps out, rubbing his eyes; seeing Swarna crying in the courtyard, he rushes toward her, alarmed.
Mayank (30):: Concerned // Swarna! What’s this drama so early in the morning? Why are you standing here in the courtyard, crying?
Swarna (25):: Resentful // You think I’m the one creating a scene, Mayank? I’m breaking my back trying to get this entire house sparkling, and everyone here is just lashing out at me!
Deenanath (78):: Matter-of-fact // No one is lashing
