Poor Boy Long Ways From Home - Art Browning plays Mississippi John Hurt

August 20, 2013 - I regret to inform viewers of this video that Mr. Art Browning passed away in a Memphis hospital this past weekend. Art was a wonderful friend to me, and I will always treasure the memories of the times we spent knocking around Avalon, Carrollton, and the Mississippi Delta. I have yet to meet a more enthusiastic and passionate fan of Mississippi John Hurt than Art was, and few people know as much about Carroll County history as he did. As you can see in this, and the two other videos of him I have posted on this channel, Art had a real gift for John Hurt's style of playing and singing, and I regret that I didn't capture more performances by him. For many years Art was the unofficial tour guide for the Mississippi John Hurt Museum, and there's no telling how many John Hurt fans from all over the world he very graciously invited into his home and the countless hours he spent taking them around to the Museum, the Valley Store, and John Hurt's grave site. He will surely be missed, as there will never be another Art Browning, who basically dedicated the last portion of his life to preserving the legacy of John Hurt and his music. May his soul rest peacefully, and be assured that he will never be forgotten by all those whose lives were enriched by this humble and very generous man. - "Lost Jim" Ohlschmidt
