🌎 How can one state contain scorching deserts, snow-covered mountains, fertile farmland, foggy coastlines, and the tallest trees on Earth?
In this video, we explore the extraordinary geography of California. The journey begins along the Pacific Coast, where cold ocean water and coastal mountains help create cool, foggy conditions. Farther inland, the Central Valley becomes warmer and drier, yet its deep soils and vast water systems support one of America’s most important agricultural regions.
To the east, the Sierra Nevada rises dramatically above the valley. Winter storms bring deep snow to these mountains, supplying rivers, reservoirs, waterfalls, farms, and cities. Beyond the mountains, the landscape changes again as dry air descends into the rain shadow, helping create Death Valley and California’s southeastern deserts.
You’ll also discover the difference between coast redwoods and giant sequoias, why so many Californians live near the coast, how water travels more than 700 miles across the state, and why the San Andreas Fault, drought, and wildfire remain powerful forces shaping California.
California’s landscapes are not random. They are the result of the Pacific Ocean, mountain barriers, elevation, tectonic movement, and an enormous system built to move water across a naturally uneven landscape.
