I BELONG ON MY OWN LIST By Jennifer Shiloh I learned to read the room Before I learned to read my heart I learned to give away my pieces Before I knew they were my own to guard I said yes when I meant maybe I said maybe when I meant no I carried everybody’s feelings And wondered where my own had gone But something in me whispered Through every sacrifice “You can love them without leaving Yourself behind” I belong on my own list I belong inside my life I can love you without losing me I can choose myself tonight I don’t have to disappear To prove that I care I can give and still have something I can breathe and still be there I belong on my own list And I don’t have to feel guilty anymore I used to think that choosing me Meant somebody else would lose That every dream I dared to follow Was a dream I had to choose But love was never meant to ask me To become somebody I’m not And a boundary isn’t punishment It’s a promise to my heart So if the guilt comes knocking I’ll ask it one more time: “Did I do something wrong Or am I just changing an old design?” I belong on my own list I belong inside my life I can love you without losing me I can choose myself tonight I don’t have to disappear To prove that I care I can give and still have something I can breathe and still be there I belong on my own list And I don’t have to feel guilty anymore I can rest without permission I can dream without a crime I can say, “This matters to me” And still have room for you in mine I can change and still be loving I can grow and still belong I can walk a different road And not explain where I went wrong If I disappoint somebody That doesn’t mean I’ve failed If I need to choose myself That doesn’t mean my love has changed I am not abandoning you. I’m no longer abandoning me. I am not becoming selfish. I’m becoming responsible for the life I was given. I belong on my own list I belong inside my life I can love you without losing me I can choose myself tonight I can honor what I need Without apologizing I can open up my wings Without asking if I’m allowed to fly I belong on my own list I always should have been And loving you was never meant To mean I couldn’t love me too So I’ll keep my heart wide open But I’ll keep myself inside it I belong on my own list And I won’t leave myself behind Maybe choosing yourself isn’t turning away from love. Maybe it’s finally learning that you are worthy of receiving the same love you’ve been giving to everyone else. I belong on my own list.
