Who were the Shudras — and how did they become the fourth Varna? In his 1946 book, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar rejects both the Brahmanic explanation and the Western theory of an Aryan invasion, and argues that the Shudras were Aryan Kshatriyas, degraded after a long feud with the Brahmins, who refused them the sacred thread (Upanayana). This film walks through the book chapter by chapter, in Hindi, from the Government of India edition of his Writings and Speeches (Volume 7). Jump to any chapter with the timestamps below. What you'll see: • The Purusha Sukta — "the Shudra sprang from his feet" — and why he calls it political jugglery • Race, the cephalic index and Max Müller: his case against an Aryan race and an Aryan invasion • "My Ganges, my Yamuna, my Saraswati" — and why Varna in the Rig Veda meant class and faith, not colour • His key evidence: Paijavana, a Shudra in the Mahabharata — the Rig Veda king Sudas, consecrated by Vasishtha • Vasishtha vs Vishvamitra, and the long war between Brahmins and kings • Upanayana, the sacred thread: how its denial, he argues, made the Shudras the fourth Varna • Shivaji's coronation in 1674, as he tells it • His thesis in six propositions — and his reply to critics: witnesses must be weighed, not counted Every argument and conclusion in this film is Dr. Ambedkar's, from his 1946 book. It is presented as his thesis, not as settled history, and nothing here is the channel's opinion. Several of his conclusions are debated by historians; the film reports what the book says.
