In this episode of Horror Bytes we take an in-depth look at Dead Space, developed by Visceral Games and published by EA Games in 2008 on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
I'll be reviewing the games story and gameplay, talk about the graphics and sound, explore the franchise's expansion into comics and films, and even get a few unsuspecting people to try it out for themselves. I'll be going into minor spoilers for the franchise but I won't be ruining the ending or any of the game's big twists.
In the 26th Century, mankind has spread across the stars and in our desperate search for resources, have created the 'planetcrackers' - spaceships that can literally crack open planets to harvest the natural resources from within. You play as engineer Isaac Clarke, a member of a repair team responding to a distress call sent by the USG Ishimura, the largest planetcracker of its class that has mysteriously cut off all communications from earth. Isaac however, has other motivations for joining the mission, as we learn that his girlfriend Nicole was a member of the ship's crew and sent him a cryptic video message shortly before communications from before the ship went dark.
After a bumpy arrival you find no sign of the crew, the ship seemingly abandoned half way through its planetcracking operations. This soon changes however, when monstrous creatures, the Necromorphs, begin to attack the repair crew and Isaac barely escapes with his life. Cut off from two other survivors, computer specialist Kendra Daniels and Security Officer Zach Hammond, Isaac is guided through radio and video communication in the group's efforts to repair the ship.
