The game is developed by a small group called The Funkin' Crew Inc. with the four founding members being the Newgrounds users Cameron "ninjamuffin99" Taylor, David "PhantomArcade" Brown, Isaac "Kawai Sprite" Garcia, and evilsk8r. The game shares some gameplay features with Dance Dance Revolution and PaRappa the Rapper and borrows aesthetic influences from Flash games. The game has been credited with driving users back to Newgrounds, a site whose popularity peaked in the early 2000s. Inspired by the Christmas tree decoration in Week 5's Winter Horrorland of the original game, the mod imagines a disease outbreak that turns the infected into dark, shadowy monsters. Updates on the mod's ongoing development are released as a video series on YouTube; as of June 2024, the series spans 23 episodes.
