Following the Voice of God

Following the Voice of God | Eagle Rock Church God speaks—but are we listening? Beyond your salvation, learning to hear and follow the voice of God is one of the most important things you can develop in your life. God desires to lead you, guide you, teach you, and reveal His truth to you. But we have a part to play: we must learn to listen and follow. John 10:27 — “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” His sheep—that’s YOU! Jesus tells us that His sheep hear His voice. But notice there is an action required: we listen, and we follow. It takes obedience to recognize what God is saying and then move in the direction He is leading. John 16:13 tells us that the Spirit of Truth will guide us into all truth and even show us things to come. God's truth can set you free from sin, wrong thinking, fear, habits, and the things that keep you bound. The Holy Spirit knows what you need to know—even what lies ahead—and He desires to guide you. But in order to be guided by His voice, you have to learn to hear His voice. John 14:26 reminds us that the Holy Spirit is our teacher. In a single moment, the Holy Spirit can speak something that changes everything. The question is: Do you know His voice well enough to recognize it when He speaks? The Holy Spirit teaches us truth, and truth is the beginning of faith. Faith trumps reason. When everything around you is pointing you in one direction, stop and ask: “What does the Bible say?” When you choose God's Word over human reasoning, you begin stepping into deeper faith and away from a carnal perspective. It can be difficult to hear God when we are consumed by the flesh—fear, worry, stress, circumstances, emotions, and human reasoning. These things can become so loud that they compete for our attention. God leads internally. Reason often leads externally. So ask yourself: How am I being guided? Am I being led by what I see, what I feel, what others are saying, and what makes sense naturally? Or am I allowing the Holy Spirit and the Word of God to direct my steps? Psalm 1 reminds us to be careful about the counsel and influence we allow to direct our lives. Our ultimate direction must come from God. God is speaking. Learn His voice. Listen for His voice. Believe His Word. Obey His direction. And FOLLOW. The more we know God's Word and walk with the Holy Spirit, the more we learn to recognize when He is leading us. Don't allow fear, worry, stress, circumstances, or human reasoning to become louder than the voice of God. Hear and follow the voice of God!
