PART 2 covers the thermal structure, all the layers and boundaries, and the standard atmospheres — ISA and JSA. No rote learning. Every concept is built as What → Why → How → When → Which → Causes & Effects, so you understand the chain instead of memorising numbers. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✅ COVERED IN THIS VIDEO ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Thermal structure — why the atmosphere is heated from below, not above Why the layers are divided by TEMPERATURE, not by height Troposphere — heights at equator and poles, lapse rate, why it is unstable Lower, Mid and Upper Troposphere Tropopause — why it exists, and the five factors that control its height Why the equator's tropopause is HIGHER but COLDER at the same time Reversal of temperature and density above 8 km Tropopause breaks and folds at 40° and 60° latitude Tropical, Middle and Polar Tropopause — 100, 200 and 300 hPa Importance of the tropopause — cloud tops, jet streams, max winds and CAT Stratosphere — isothermal layer, then inversion, and why ozone causes it Nacreous clouds (Mother of Pearl) Stratopause Mesosphere and Mesopause — the coldest point of the atmosphere Noctilucent clouds Thermosphere and the Ionosphere — radio wave propagation Exosphere — and why "high temperature" does not mean "hot" ISA — every value, and why a standard atmosphere is needed at all ISA Deviation — Actual minus ISA, with worked examples JSA — and the one thing that makes it different from ISA ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📝 QUESTIONS ARE IN A SEPARATE PLAYLIST ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ All 45 questions of this chapter — with the correct answer, why that option is correct, and why every other option is wrong — are covered in a DEDICATED QUESTION BANK PLAYLIST. 👉 Do check it. Concepts alone will not clear the paper. The traps are in the questions. Link to the playlist is in the comments and on the channel homepage. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📺 WATCH IN ORDER ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ PART 1 — Composition: gases, ratios, greenhouse effect, ozone, water vapour, how the atmosphere is heated PART 2 — This video: thermal structure, layers, boundaries, ISA and JSA QUESTION BANK PLAYLIST — All 45 questions solved with full reasoning ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📌 TIMESTAMPS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 00:00 Recap of Part 1 and what this video covers 00:00 Thermal structure — heated from below 00:00 How the layers are defined 00:00 Troposphere — height, lapse rate, instability 00:00 Sub-divisions of the troposphere 00:00 Tropopause — what happens there 00:00 Five factors controlling tropopause height 00:00 Higher but colder — the equator paradox 00:00 Reversal of temperature above 8 km 00:00 Tropopause breaks and folds 00:00 Tropical, Middle and Polar Tropopause 00:00 Importance of the tropopause 00:00 Stratosphere and the ozone inversion 00:00 Nacreous clouds 00:00 Mesosphere and Mesopause 00:00 Noctilucent clouds 00:00 Thermosphere and Ionosphere 00:00 Exosphere 00:00 ISA — all values 00:00 ISA Deviation with worked sums 00:00 JSA and how it differs from ISA 00:00 Quick revision ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📘 REFERENCE BOOK ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Primary reference: ICJ Meteorology — Chapter 1. This is the book recommended to students. Buy it, read it, mark it up. Supplementary reading: OCAA and Climatology for Airline Pilots. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⚠️ THE THREE THINGS STUDENTS GET WRONG HERE ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 1. ISA tropopause is 11 km. The ACTUAL tropopause is 8–10 km at the poles and 16–18 km at the equator. Three different numbers, three different meanings. 2. The MESOPAUSE is the coldest point, not the thermosphere. 3. Nacreous belongs to the STRATOSPHERE, Noctilucent to the MESOSPHERE. Never swap them. All three explained in the video. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ DISCLAIMER ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ NOT FOR PROFIT — SLEEPY NOTES.
