Internal name: new_00_0.cnd. BPM: 84. Music by Kazumi Totaka, Music recorded in Logic Pro X, visuals made in Corrscope. Download: https://drive.google.com/drive/folder... My Carrd: https://wafflesmogumogu.carrd.co/ This song is used only on the first floor of Emergence Cave, the sort of tutorial level of caves of Pikmin 2. The theme is very cold and quiet, which is good musical accompaniment for a new player who is getting the hang of exploring a cave for the very first time. In Challenge Mode, this track is also used as one of the generic musical tracks for snow-blanketed caverns: this fits alongside the snow cavern's visuals, which are very mute and minimal in detail. The music will activate extra instruments depending on the game state: Main: 0:00 Working: 1:08 Carrying treasure: 1:54 Enemy near: 3:02 Battling enemy: 3:48 More things can affect the music too but aren't demonstrated in the video, such as the rhythm changing when swapping between characters, the tempo decreasing when low on health, and instruments intentionally skipping notes if the player's Pikmin squad gets a huge bite taken out of it (the music will begin to sound like it has "holes" in it). Pikmin 2's cave music also infinitely, randomly generates! It uses a "gesture" system: instruments in a specific song pull basic sequences of notes from a gesture bank and play them, also sometimes at random times according to some extra defined rules. (You can think of it like a folder containing a ton of tiny MIDI files of few notes, which are then randomly puzzle-pieced together, infinitely) Instruments used: Winter1: Pikmin 2 Winter2: Pikmin 2 Winter3: Pikmin 2 Winter4: Pikmin 2 Kick _R: Yamaha - MOTIF-Rack (Drum Kits) Hat k_L: Yamaha - MOTIF-Rack (Drum Kits) Bell01: Yamaha - MOTIF-Rack Bell02: Yamaha - MOTIF-Rack Bell03: Yamaha - MOTIF-Rack Bell04: Yamaha - MOTIF-Rack Puiano: Pikmin 2 Tabla 1: Spectrasonics - Supreme Beats (World) Instrument ramblings (Feel free to ignore): The sample for the "Winter" instrument Is also used in the Rest sublevel music and then Jellyfloat Pool. It's named "WntSun" at some point, which makes me wonder if its at all related with the "SunRa" sample used in the Giant Breadbug theme; both are pretty similar, organ-like... Sun Ra is the name of a famous keyboardist, so there must be some sort of relation to him. Perhaps Totaka sampled a vinyl..? Totaka, after all, is notorious for being an avid (VERY smelly) sampler. The drum machine samples are from one of the MOTIF's drum kits. The drums on the MOTIF absolutely rock, though the synth does very much favor electronic stuff more than acoustic. The bells are from the MOTIF as well, though the original sound is a slow pad. Its called Bell Choir. For this song, they are cropped out the middle of the recording, so the sample starts without that long attack. This sound is pretty great in stereo. Puiano is such a fun name for an instrument I've no idea where its from yet. It certainly sounds like a soft discordant piano, and its reused in a couple more songs in the exact same manner. It's good as startling, alieny "enemy alert!" noise, being played at random pitches (out of 9 possible ones). Rapid-fire tablas are awesome, starting with Lethal Lava Land from Mario 64 and then riding Yoshi in Mario Sunshine. I don't ever think I've heard them be associated with a snow level before, so props to Totaka. Though in a dark cavern, it does open the doors a little for a more exotic instrument like that. Pikmin 2 (2004) would be the very first game Kazumi Totaka would use the Yamaha MOTIF (2001) in, and you could tell he really loved his new synth considering how its in nearly every single song he's composed for this game, and then later using it all over the early Wii era stuff, like the music for the Wii Shop, Mii Channel, and Wii Sports. ---------- Every song is transcribed and recreated by ear, though I substitute some samples with uncompressed, higher quality ones. If you are searching for a free oscilloscope, I highly recommend checking out Corrscope which is the program used in this video. Its good fun and I thought It would make great use as a tool to show off some of my Pikmin music projects.
