"Applying the Mato Technique in African Art Music Composition" Evans Netshivhambe |University of South Africa Abstract: Mato is a traditional compositional technique rooted in the musical practices of the Venda people of northern South Africa. It originates in indigenous dance genres such as Malende, Tshigombela, and Tshifasi, in which musical structure is closely informed by text, movement, and communal expression. As a compositional principle, Mato foregrounds the shaping of melodic and rhythmic phraseology through textual meaning, revealing how linguistic contours guide musical form. The term, derived from the word Toolola, meaning “to explain in detail,” is used exclusively in a musical context as Mato to denote a performer or composer’s technical and creative capacity to articulate melody and rhythmic contour phraseology. Drawing on musical analysis, text–music relationship analysis, and a review of relevant literature, this study argues that both African art music composers and popular musicians frequently employ the Mato compositional technique to structure melodic and rhythmic contours and facilitate harmonic resolution. In doing so, the research positions Mato as a significant indigenous compositional framework that continues to inform contemporary African musical expression.
