Your towels come out of the dryer soft and smelling lovely, and they still won't dry you. That's the fabric softener, and it's why your white towels have gone gray. I never used a drop of it in forty years in England's great houses, and our towels were thick, white and dried you in one pass. In this video I'll show you how to strip the build-up out of your towels, why they smell musty the minute they get damp, and the little bottle the old laundry maids swore by. It's still sold in America for about five dollars. THE WATER TEST Drip a few drops of water on your oldest towel. If it beads on top before sinking in, your towel is coated. STRIPPING YOUR TOWELS Wash 1: towels only, no detergent, 1 cup white vinegar, hottest setting the label allows Wash 2: 1/2 cup baking soda only, hot Two separate washes, never together FROM NOW ON Half the detergent you use now 1/2 cup white vinegar in the fabric softener drawer Don't overload the washer Whites with whites, and oxygen bleach instead of chlorine Snap each towel before drying, use medium heat, and swap dryer sheets for wool dryer balls Hang towels open to dry before they go in the hamper LAUNDRY BLUING Mix about 1/4 tsp into a quart of cold water first, then add it to the filled washer Never pour it straight onto fabric, and use it on whites only SAFETY Never mix vinegar with chlorine bleach. Together they release a toxic gas Tell me in the comments: who taught you how to do the laundry, and what was the one rule you weren't allowed to break?
