The Koneswaram Temple, located on Swami Rock in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, is an ancient Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, with history and legends tied to King Ravana. In this video, I will explore the Thirukoneshwaram Temple and see how Ravana tried to destroy this Ancient Shiva Temple. Hindu legend states that King Ravana and his mother worshipped Lord Shiva at the Thirukoneshwaram Temple. Folklore says Ravana's mother fell ill and could not visit the shrine. Ravana tried to lift or cut the rocky promontory with his sword to bring the temple to her. Lord Shiva intervened by pressing his toe on the rock, stopping Ravana and creating a massive cleft in Swami Rock known today as Ravana Vettu. Also, Destruction by the Portuguese: 🛕The 1624 Demolition: The classical "Temple of a Thousand Pillars" was completely demolished by Portuguese colonists in 1624. 🛕Fort Construction: The Portuguese used the rubble and stone fragments from the ancient Hindu temple to build Fort Fredrick to defend the harbor against the Dutch. 🛕Restoration: Devotees hid several sacred bronze idols (murthis) in a well before the destruction.
