In the book of old stories there's a crow who can't reach the water at the bottom of a jar, so it drops in stones until the water comes up. Avery says that's not true. Stones sink. Sinking is down. She has a whole argument ready, and she delivers it standing up.
Mom doesn't disagree. She just gets a jar. Mom fills it, Avery draws a line on the glass at the top of the water, and Dad brings in gravel from the driveway, washed and dried. Then Avery drops the stones in, one at a time, and counts. Gus arrives at stone twenty-two with a theory: the stones are drinking the water.
What children find out: the stones don't soak the water up. They take up room at the bottom, so the water has nowhere to go but up. And real birds in the crow family have been tested doing it.
For grown-ups: an episode about being completely sure and then checking - and having to tell the whole house the book was right. "You were so sure. And then you got a jar." The Crow and the Pitcher is a traditional fable, retold here.
Avery's Toolbelt is a calm, hands-on show for ages 3-6: real tools, real cars, real kitchens, and a grown-up's hands on anything that's hot, sharp or moving.
