*LOWER HARBOR TRAIL - Video Guide* One of Acadia's newest hiking trails, Lower Harbor Trail offers a hike across from Schoodic Woods Campground that has unique views of the tides flowing in & out of Mount Desert Narrows as it wanders along the upper northwest side of the peninsula. If a picture is worth 1000 words...what's a video worth? *KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE TRAIL* see the Terrain, Trailheads, Views, and Intersecting Trails... NATURE!!! LIKE or SUBSCRIBE - I'd like for you to do either, I'd LOVE for you to do both! Beginning at the Schoodic Woods Campground & Visitor Center walk down the road from the parking area. The trailhead is found across Schoodic Loop Road from the sign for Schoodic Woods. LOWER HARBOR TRAIL begins entering the woods heading west in dirt paths with roots & occasional granite rock trail. As it passes lichen & moss it winds into & through more densely packed trees. The trail then begins to descend down to the water, with speckles of blue through the treesand footing that becomes a little more uneven. At the end of the descent, the trail turns right heading along a dirt & forest cliffside rise about 10-20 meters above the Mount Desert Narrows' water. The walk along the rise for a while yields peeks at the water through the trees that open occasionally to open overlooks tempting attempts to somehow climb down to below. There is no need to attempt this as before long the path begins to descend to it. Arriving at side paths to coves & stone beaches at low tide is ideal as the water of the shallows is clear. Varieties of aquatic animals can be observed as they dart in & around smooth rocks in the water along the shore. The smaller beach stones shift underfoot making their distinctive sound as the tide pulls at the threads of the aquatic vegetation nearby. After the beaches, the trail rises from the coastline, crossing small streams on bog boards & a wood plank bridge as it arrives at a familiar height and reprises its earlier peek-a-boo with the water through the trees from above. After a while the path begins turning to the right and climbing back up to the road. Roots thicken to occasional carpets across the path, bog boards steady footing, and what exposed granite appears has some glacial scoring. Arriving back at the road, a bench is there for the Park Shuttle that circumnavigates the peninsula road every 40 minutes or so. Across the street an unnamed connector trail goes to the flat bike paths that add miles as they wind back toward Schoodic Woods and the Visitor Center. The shorter direct route of the road may seem preferable if legs are fatigued, but all 3 are great options. I hope my efforts make your watching experience AND your next visit to ACADIA NATIONAL PARK ... Wicked Awesome! FRIENDLY REMINDER: no matter the difficulty, hiking has risks... HAVE A PLAN... the best times are had when planned properly. Alternate, shorter routes than what you intend to hike are abundant in Acadia... your hiking plan can include them as contingencies. Injuries can happen, let others know your planned route and timeframe... cell service is spotty in Acadia National Park. Remember: know your limits so you can push them, and DEFINITELY REMEMBER: what goes up must come down which includes you... AND if you enjoy the tour, your guide does accept likes, subscriptions and comments... (an option of leaving a tip: ie a link for actual tips through patreon is likely coming soonish). Be Safe! Live your purpose, change your world... Share your knowledge, change the world...
