The First Gun Ever Made: How Humans Invented Firearms

Gunpowder wasn't invented to make a weapon. It was invented by accident, by Chinese alchemists searching for a potion for eternal life. This is the real, fully-researched history of how that accident became the gun. In this video we trace the true origin of firearms: the earliest gunpowder formulas from Tang Dynasty China, the fire lance and its first confirmed use in battle at the siege of De'an in 1132, the transition to metal barrels that created the first true hand cannons, the Heilongjiang hand cannon and the Xanadu Gun (the oldest surviving gun with a securely dated inscription, from 1298), and how the technology spread across Eurasia to reach Europe by the 1320s. We also cover the matchlock, wheellock, flintlock, and percussion cap, the chain of inventions that solved the same problem over and over: how to ignite gunpowder faster and more safely. This video flags those uncertainties rather than presenting them as settled fact. Next video: coming soon.
