The Librarian's Secret Drawer | A Cozy Victorian Mystery Story

Above the old town hall in Kestrelwick, rain moving down the tall window, the books standing shoulder to shoulder in their rows. Mr. Godfrey Aldous, fifty-four, has kept the subscription library for twelve years, and the stamping ritual is the heart of his day — the book opened flat, the stamp pressed firm, the date inked in the ledger — the way his aunt Honoria taught him. But in the walnut desk, one drawer has a lock. Honoria always said the drawer was private. And for three years, the little locked drawer has been his. Up here, above it all, it is quiet the way libraries are quiet. Let the day dissolve — I'll keep the lamp lit for you.
