Black September is also known as the Jordanian Civil War. It was a time of deep infighting, complex politics and essentially a war of survival for Jordan’s monarchy. It was fought between Jordanian forces of King Hussein and Palestinian fidayen groups. Jordan became a centre for refugees coming from Palestine after Arab Israel war of 1948 and Arab Israel war of 1967. More than 3 million Palestinians poured inside Jordan’s border. Many more already lived in Jordan. Prior to that West Bank and East Jerusalem was also under Jordanian control which was now lost. This led to conflicts like between Israeli forces and palestinian groups like battle of Karameh but at the same time things got complicated for Jordan as well. Jordan was under pressure from the Western countries to take action against these Palestinian fedayeen. As the power of fedayeen grew, Jordanian forces started losing the control of areas with Palestinian refugee camps. The peak of the conflict was 1970. There were attempts like seven point agreement and ceasefires announced between Yasir Arafat and King Hussein but to no avail. Shah Hussain’s motorcade came under fire twice. The activities of these groups added more political pressure on Shah Hussain, King of Jordan. Now these groups were openly opposing him and calling for overthrow of Hashemite monarchy in Jordan. Confrontations started in June and continued till September end. Dawson field hijacking incident proved to be the last nail in the coffin. Jordanian forces started their action against these groups. These fedayeen groups put up a strong resistance to these forces. Meanwhile forces from Syria also attacked Jordan. This conflict ended in the victory for Jordanian forces.
Black September is also known for the role of Ziaul Haq who according to some officials led Jordanian forces at that time. Zia-ul-Haq, former President of Pakistan was a Brigadier in Pakistan army at that time and posted in Jordan for training of Jordanian military forces. Due to his role, it is said that he took part in the massacre of Palestinians. It is also said that he did out of his mandate and because of his personal ambition. But there is an opposite view that it was the cooperation between Pakistan and Jordan, and not between Zia ul Haq and King Hussein. This video delves deep into the events of Black September and builds a timeline for better understanding. It also discusses what happened before black September, during and then after these events as well. It tries to simply the complex nature of these events. It also discusses what was Ziaul Haq’s role in it and did he actually play any part in the events of Black September or not?
