"The greatest idol is not carved from stone... it is the one hidden within the heart."
This original qawwali is a poetic reflection on one of the most profound themes in Sufi spirituality: the defeat of the ego (nafs).
Inspired by the timeless wisdom of Shams-e-Tabrizi, this performance journeys through the hidden battle that every seeker must face—not against the world, but against the whisper of "I".
The ego says:
"See me."
The heart replies:
"Let only Allah be seen."
The ego seeks knowledge to become greater.
Love seeks surrender to become nothing.
Through the transforming encounter between Shams and Jalal al-Din Rumi, the scholar is not given more information—he is set ablaze until only the lover remains.
The recurring refrain...
"مِٹا دے، مِٹا دے، یہ 'میں' مِٹا دے"
"Erase this 'I'..."
...becomes both a prayer and a spiritual struggle, echoing the Sufi path of mujāhadat al-nafs—striving against the lower self—and ultimately fanā, where the illusion of self fades and only the Divine remains.
This is not merely a song.
It is an invitation to look into the mirror of your own heart.
Ask yourself:
Am I seeking Allah... or merely a holier version of myself?
