THIS WAS ADDICTIVE — roaming the Ragged Victorians historical event with the Leica Q2 and an off‑camera flash gave everyday scenes a cinematic, dramatic look I couldn’t stop shooting. In this video, I share the best frames and quick tips for mixing ambient light with a portable off‑camera flash.
About the shoot:
Location: Ragged Victorians historical event
Camera: Leica Q2 (28mm equiv.)
Lighting: Off‑camera flash system — handheld/remote for rim, fill, and dramatic separation
Shooting style: Candid street portraits and environmental scenes, fast framing, blending ambient and flash for mood
What you’ll see:
• Full‑frame samples from the event
• How I positioned the off‑camera flash for rim, short‑lighting, and subtle fill
• Example exposure settings and why I chose them (shutter, aperture, ISO)
• Quick post‑processing notes and selection criteria
• My favourite frames and what made them work
Quick gear & settings:
• Leica Q2 — 28mm equivalent
• Flash: off‑camera, usually 1/2 to 1/16 power depending on distance and look (adjust as needed for rim vs fill)
• Shutter: ~1/125 – 1/1000 to balance ambient
• Aperture: ~f/2.8 – f/11 depending on indoor/outdoor and desired depth of field
• ISO: 100 – 400 depending on available light
