Jimmy Choi is an athlete, Parkinson’s advocate, marathon runner, world-record holder, and seven-time American Ninja Warrior competitor who has been living with Parkinson’s for more than two decades. In this episode, he joins Gaia to explore a powerful question: What does it really mean to train like an athlete when you have Parkinson’s? Together, they discuss Jimmy’s journey from being diagnosed at just 27 and spending eight years in denial to completely changing the way he approached movement and his life. Jimmy shares why he stopped simply exercising and started training with a purpose, how high-intensity exercise, strength, balance, and recovery have shaped his approach, and why his training continues to evolve as Parkinson’s progresses. They also talk openly about mental health, vulnerability, asking for help, building the right care team, and the family that remains Jimmy’s reason behind everything he does. Jimmy’s mindset is simple: “I’m not striving to be an athlete. I’m striving to be the best person I can be for my family.” WHAT WE COVER: Early Years and Diagnosis: (0:00:00 - 0:08:00) Discusses his diagnosis at age 27, his initial eight years in denial, and the eventual shift in his mindset toward health.
