Ghazal No. 1 from the Divan of Sanai Ghaznavi, beginning with: Praise and delight, O beautiful beloved, You have come to us adorned. In this ghazal, Sanai speaks of the arrival of his beautiful and beloved companion with warmth, affection, and joy. The presence of the beloved becomes the central focus of the poem, leaving no one else comparable in the poet’s eyes. The poem then creates a festive and intimate atmosphere. Sanai invites the beloved to loosen the belt, take up the wine cup, and adorn their gathering. He contrasts journeys, travel, and the pleasures of wandering in the countryside with the joy of remaining in the beloved’s presence. Sanai then turns toward the passage of time, calling upon the beloved to enjoy the present day and bid farewell to yesterday and tomorrow. The poem ultimately takes on a more intimate and longing tone as Sanai confesses that he cannot endure separation from the beloved and has no choice but to remain patient and seek companionship with them. In this video, Sanai Ghaznavi’s mystical and lyrical ghazal is presented through music and Persian miniature painting inspired by the artistic tradition of Kamāl al-Dīn Behzād, accompanied by Shekasteh calligraphy. Kamāl al-Dīn Behzād, born in Herat, in what is now western Afghanistan. was one of the most influential miniature painters of the Timurid and early Safavid periods, known for his intricate compositions and expressive storytelling. Shekasteh Nastaʿliq is traditionally attributed by some sources to Morteza Qoli Khan Shamlu, the Safavid governor of Herat, who developed it by modifying the Nastaʿliq script. His secretary, Mohammad Shafiʿ Heravi, is also credited with helping refine and develop the style.
