Hey guys! We’re now live on Spotify 🎧 Listen here: https://open.spotify.com/show/033WB8M... In 1346, the Teutonic Knights accomplished something extraordinary. Instead of conquering new territory through war, they bought northern Estonia from Denmark for 19,000 silver marks. But why would a Danish king sell such an important territory to a powerful military order? This is the fascinating story of how the Teutonic Knights expanded their influence across the Baltic and how one medieval land deal changed the political future of Northern Europe. For more than a century, Denmark controlled northern Estonia, including the important trading city of Tallinn. However, the St. George's Night Uprising of 1343, political instability, and the challenges of maintaining distant territories made Danish rule increasingly difficult. King Valdemar IV of Denmark faced a difficult decision. As he worked to restore his kingdom's power and finances, selling Denmark's Estonian possessions became an attractive option. In 1346, Denmark agreed to transfer northern Estonia to the Teutonic Order for 19,000 silver marks. The purchase strengthened the Order's position in the Baltic and expanded the territory administered by its Livonian branch. In this documentary, we explore how Denmark gained control of Estonia, why the Estonian uprising weakened Danish authority, how the Teutonic Knights negotiated the purchase, and what happened to the region after the historic agreement. Discover the political ambitions, military struggles, economic interests, and diplomatic negotiations behind one of medieval Europe's most remarkable territorial transactions.
