From it being released as an alpha to Steam Greenlight, the whole way to the present day. Shortly after being greenlit, Pirate Software (AKA Thor) and the team created a Kickstarter campaign that raised over $19,000. Despite this, a full and complete version of the game has never been released. It has been put up on Steam as an Early Access title and, in the present day after the OnlyFangs WoW guild drama, is supposedly being worked on and will receive regular updates. But this affair could lead some to ask certain questions like "Did Pirate Software scam?" or "Was Pirate Software's Kickstarter for Heartbound a scam if the game was never completed?" Although I have seen no explicit mention from notable people claiming it was a scam, in the end the game hasn't released (at the time of uploading) even after seven years of development.
