India may be on the verge of one of the biggest breakthroughs in its defence and aerospace history. Reports suggest the proposed AMCA Engine Deal between Safran and DRDO's Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) has reached the final stage of government approval. If cleared, the AMCA Engine programme could give India full intellectual property rights over a next-generation fighter jet engine, marking a historic milestone for the country's defence industry and reducing long-term dependence on foreign propulsion technology. The proposed 120 kN engine is expected to power the AMCA Fighter Jet Mk2, while the first version of the AMCA will initially use GE F414 engines manufactured in India by HAL. Reports also indicate that engineers are already planning a future 140 kN engine for next-generation combat aircraft. The AMCA Project is being supported by the National Aero Engine Mission, alongside continued work on Kaveri 2.0 and the Kaveri Engine, reflecting India's broader push towards self-reliance in advanced aerospace technology.
