Here is the video of the taxi testing using a duct tape camera mount. (GoPro to come). The vid is uncut from start to finish but for the section where on a faster run the hanging camera started to swing out from the air pressure under the wing and aim at the runway.
50F and a perfectly still morning, the engine starts after a few turns of the prop and settles to a mellow idle. With brakes off a little more than a nudge on the throttle I am moving under my own power for the first time and it all feels very real and worth every moment of the build (which I loved anyway) All I do in the vid is taxi around a bit as well as up and back on both runways, one gravel and the other sealed. Steering is pretty direct and tight turns are greatly enhance with the use of the differential brakes.
At one stage I pushed the throttle to about 1/4 way and quickly pulled it back as the LE leapt forward instantly and the last thing I wanted was to find myself inadvertently airborne. My ASI and the clear hall wind meter both read 20mph which was fast enough. At the end of the 20mph run, I tight turned to backtrack and the tailwheel arm bent from being pulled over centre so I go out and disconnected the chains leaving me with a free castering tailwheel. (I am now in the process of rebuilding/modifying the tailwheel assembly.) At taxi speeds the rudder by itself has no affect on directional control however using the differential brakes was a breeze to keep the LE straight. Not long now and we will be flying :)
