In this lecture on Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.5.31, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that people in general, especially in this age, do not know the goal of life, and that those who lead them do not know it either. He compares this to a blind man leading other blind men, and says that the real problems of life are birth, death, old age and disease, which come from having a material body. He speaks about how the duration of life becomes shorter from Satya-yuga to Kali-yuga, how the land belongs to God and not to nations, and how our activities under the modes of material nature give us different types of bodies. Using the example of a prisoner who should learn from his sentence, he explains that we should learn how we were put into this material condition and how to return to Godhead. He also explains that the material world is only one-fourth of God’s creation. In the question-and-answer session, Śrīla Prabhupāda answers questions about whether he is sure of what he says about the moon, the soul and fire, why he accepts śāstra as his authority, why God gives us independence, and how Kṛṣṇa guides us like a driver in the machine of the body.
