Pull up a chair. The stacks are open.
Tonight we take down a beloved volume from the classics shelf and begin Jane Austen's Emma, one episode at a time. In these first three chapters we meet Emma Woodhouse, "handsome, clever, and rich," at Hartfield with her devoted father. We see the first small change in Highbury when her friend and governess Miss Taylor marries, and we listen to the evening talk of a village where nothing very dramatic ever seems to happen. Then a shy new friend arrives, and Emma makes up her mind what she will do with her.
Settle in. Your Librarian opens with a short introduction to Austen, the Regency world she wrote in, and the dedication to the Prince Regent. Then the story is read in Austen's own words, unabridged, for about fifty minutes. After a quiet closing, the music continues softly with slow, dimming images to the end of the hour, so you can drift off undisturbed.
