What was it actually like to be a teenager in the Stone Age? 0:00 Being 15 in the Stone Age 1:25 When Did Childhood Actually End? 2:49 A Very Different Teenage Life 3:47 How Teenagers May Have Shaped Their World 4:33 Growing Up Gets More Complicated 5:31 What Archaeology Can Actually Tell Us 6:25 One Teenager Changes the Story 7:15 So What Was a Stone Age Teenager Really Like? Prehistoric teenagers lived in a world without schools, phones, modern jobs or even a clear universal age when childhood ended. By fifteen, some young people may already have been learning to hunt, make tools, process animals, travel between groups and contribute to everyday survival. But that does not mean they were simply treated as adults. Archaeologists have studied the remains of real Upper Palaeolithic teenagers, including adolescents who were still progressing through puberty in their mid-teens. Burials at places such as Sunghir and Dolní Věstonice also show that young people could occupy meaningful positions within prehistoric communities. In this video, we look at how Stone Age teenagers learned, worked, played, travelled, formed relationships and gradually moved from childhood into adulthood. And we meet Il Principe — a real prehistoric teenager who lived roughly 27,000 years ago and gives us one of the most remarkable glimpses into adolescence in the Stone Age.
