THE SONGBIRD: Corinna Mologni was born in Milan and began her music career as professional symphonic timpanist, while also studying voice in Paris (including private studies with Renata Scotto). She made her debut with the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki in 1995 as a soloist in Rossini's "Stabat Mater," and sang small roles there over several seasons until 2000 when she started appearing in leading roles (Musetta, Violetta, Angelica in "Orlando Paladino," Adina, Magda, Zdenka, and Contessa di Folleville). Mologni has also sung principal lyric-coloratura roles in works by Rossini, Puccini, Bellini, Handel, and Mozart in Bern, Geneve, Tel Aviv, Hannover, Bologna, Palermo, Wildbad, St. Petersburg, Coruna, Lausanne, and Paris among others. This performance from "Il signor Bruschino" was recorded from a broadcast out of Lausanne in 2004.
THE MUSIC: Rossini's one-act comic opera premiered in Venice in 1813, the last of a series of five one-act farces he composed for Venice at beginning of his career. Typical for this popular genre, the plot involves a pair of young lovers who use cunning and disguises to overcome the obstacles to their union. Sofia's aria "Ah, donate il caro sposo" features the English horn (cor anglais).
