The horrific civil war, which ended exactly 50 years ago, claimed the lives of over 5 million people. The war over the breakaway state of Biafra is widely regarded as an unpleasant episode, most Nigerians forgot, but it remains a life-defining occurrence for the Igbo people. In 1967, the Republic of Biafra seceded, with 33-year-old military officer Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu at the helm, following two coups and unrest that resulted in around a million Igbos returning to the south-east of Nigeria. The Nigerian government declared war, and Biafra surrendered after 30 months of fighting. The dispute came to an end on January 15, 1970.
