Lopes Graça (1906–1994) Fernando Lopes Graça was perhaps the most important Portuguese composer in the twentieth century. Between 1959 and 1981, Graça collected no fewer than 228 a capella folk songs from all over Portugal, single-handedly recorded and collected, in particular from rural people. He was influenced in this work by Béla Bartók, whom he had briefly met in Paris. He edited many of these songs into choral music, often with exciting harmonisations and twists. JIP Chamber Choir is a project choir from Utrecht, the Netherlands, founded in 2013 by brothers Jonathan and Imre Ploeg. JIP wants to present new and unknown choir music from all over the world, brought together in surprising, engaging and fundamental themes like war and peace, the nomadic life, the refugee crisis and the ecological crisis. For this project we worked together with the fantastic ensemble The Windsor Consort. We have immersed ourselves in the culture, language and music of Portugal.
