The Testimony Behind “Generation to Generation (Psalm 145)”
Praising God is something deep in my bones. I have always loved music, and I have always loved praising Him through music. But something changed drastically in July 2022, when God inspired a six-and-a-half-hour worship session that brought tremendous breakthrough into my life.
After that day, worship became more than something I loved to do. It became a vital part of how I walk with God and face the circumstances of life.
I seek to praise Him when I am down, and I praise Him when I am overflowing with joy. No matter what I am facing, turning my heart toward praise shifts my perspective. It takes my eyes off my circumstances, fixes them back on Jesus, and helps me rise above what is happening around me.
I consider it an incredible honor to help lead others in worship of our King. I'm still learning, but it's an incredible joy! I pray that never changes!
Since God began empowering me to write songs, I have also become very attentive to the passages and themes in Scripture that He highlights. Sometimes it is a passage I have studied repeatedly for years. Other times, familiar words suddenly come alive in a new way. Whatever the case, it is usually very evident when the Holy Spirit is drawing my attention to something He wants me to turn into a song.
I have spent a great deal of time in the Psalms this summer, and many of them have become the foundation for new songs. Psalm 145 continued to rise to the surface.
I love the way David pours out praise to God in this psalm. He exalts Him as his God and King and declares that he will praise His name every day—forever and ever. He celebrates God’s greatness, compassion, faithfulness, righteousness, and abundant goodness.
“Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom.”
Those words express what is in my own heart. God has been so good and faithful to me. I have so much for which to thank Him!
The Lord has also been highlighting the importance of remembering and passing our faith to the next generation. This is a strong value within our church, where we often speak about becoming a truly multigenerational church. We long to see every generation knowing God, worshiping together, and declaring His goodness to those who come after them.
This theme is also deeply personal to me.
At family gatherings, my grandfather often quoted 3 John 1:4:
“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”
He would speak those words over our family and share how deeply grateful he was that his children, their spouses, and his grandchildren knew the Lord. He was passionate about his faith, and he faithfully passed that love for Jesus down to the next generation.
My parents then passed it down to me. Now I have sought to pass it down to my own children.
There is nothing greater than knowing and following Jesus. Of all the things we could leave to those who come after us, there is no greater legacy than a life that points them toward Him.
“Generation to Generation (Psalm 145)” grew from that desire: to exalt God for who He is, proclaim His mighty works, and tell those who come after us about His goodness and faithfulness.
“One generation commends Your works to another; they tell of Your mighty acts.”
May we praise Him boldly, tell of all He has done, and pass our love for Jesus from generation to generation—as long as we have left before He returns.
